The Canonization of Ted: A New Low for Jim Wallis
LRC Blog - Bill Anderson - September 3, 2009
Shortly before his death of brain cancer in 1991, Lee Atwater converted to Catholicism and attempted to reconcile with people who had been targets of his political attacks. You can read about his repentance here.
I point this out because Sojourners Magazine launched a vicious attack on Atwater after his death and declared that whatever he did in repentance was not good enough, and that had he really wanted to repent, he “should have apologized to Rodney King.” In other words, since his politics were not in agreement with those of Jim Wallis, Atwater really was not a Christian.
In his post today on the funeral of Ted Kennedy, Wallis raises Kennedy to outright sainthood. Keep in mind that many people, including Judge Robert Bork, were the targets of vicious attacks by Kennedy, yet there were no apologies that came from Teddy in his last days.
There are many howlers in this evil, pathetic article, but this just about says it all, and exposes the outright idolatry that is the political god that Wallis worships:
------------------------------------------As the casket of Edward Moore Kennedy climbed up the hill toward his final resting place next to the eternal flame at Arlington National Cemetery, one could almost hear those words of Jesus, “Come, O blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world, for I was hungry and you gave me food.”

Bill, I find myself wondering two things regarding Wallis’s Kennedy panegyric:
1. Did Ted Kennedy ever actually feed anyone with his own money or his own two hands?
2. When did taking money from one person (while threatening to kill them if they don’t hand it over) become an act of charity signifying the sanctified and denoting the Kingdom of God?
